Cycle path over Lake Garda

If you are an adrenaline junky, then you probably enjoy cycling on a mountain next to a cliff. How about cycling 60 m (197 ft) over the crystalline waters of a lake?

That is the idea behind the project planned for Lake Garda in Italy. Cycling tourism has been booming over the years. Who doesn't enjoy the excitement of sight-seeing at your own pace?

The challenge for tour operators now is to offer diverse cycling adventures.  According to the Balearic Tourism Agency and Mallorca, there will be a 44% increase in the number of cyclists traveling to Majorca this year. Italy wants a piece of the action, hence, the idea of the bridge over Lake Garda.

The "floating" cycling path will surround Lake Garda and have a total distance of 140 km.  According to the Garda Post, the entire construction will cost €102 million ($124 million).  The first section of the project will open this summer and the entire completed project will open by 2021.

On the western side of the lake, Ciclabile di Limone sul Garda cycle path hugs the cliff through a notoriously rugged terrain.  The design will make cyclists feel like they are flying next to the cliff surrounding the lake.

Nearby town Limone sul Garda's mayor hopes that “this will be the most spectacular cycle path in Europe”.

Once the Ciclabile di Limone sul Garda is completed, it will cover a total distance of about 140 km and accommodate cyclists of all proficiency levels.

Although the idea behind the cycling path is to attract more tourists, there is also a hope that the path will connect more remote villages around the lake, opening them to tourism as well.
